OUR STORY

Sunnyslope Church began meeting in an upstairs meeting room at the YWCA in downtown Salem.

Our History

Sunnyslope Church began meeting in an upstairs meeting room at the YWCA in downtown Salem. Many of the earliest members were Dutch dairy farmers who had relocated from California to Oregon. In 1964, the church became officially organized, and began construction on a building in the Sunnyslope Neighborhood of South Salem.

In the 50-plus years since that time, we’ve called this neighborhood home, though we’ve grown and changed a lot in that time! We’ve been served by 10 pastors or associate pastors over those years.

Our Present

Today, we are committed to serving our neighbors not just in South Salem, but in all of the communities throughout the Willamette Valley where our members live. You’ll find us to be a multi-generational congregation, from a variety of backgrounds. What we share in common is our love for Jesus Christ, and our commitment to him.

We are a church in the Reformed tradition, which means that we share the conviction that God is the author of our salvation, from beginning to end. We can do nothing to earn or deserve God’s favor — yet, though we do not deserve it, God draws us into a relationship to himself, only through the work that Jesus has finished our behalf.

We are also connected to the larger body known as the Christian Reformed Church. The Christian Reformed Church (or, the “CRC”) has its roots in West Michigan, and there are congregations found all throughout Canada and the United States.
